Measurement workflow
Build a reliable project sketch
- Divide the project into measured rectangles or other supported shapes and remove confirmed exclusions.
- Record the compacted depth of each material layer from the approved project design.
- Confirm the loose-volume or compaction convention used by the supplier or product system.
- Verify density, delivery unit, bag or bulk capacity, waste, access, drainage, and site conditions.

Worked example
A patio plan identifies one compacted base layer and one bedding layer over the same net area.
Estimate each layer independently because depth, compaction behavior, density, and supplier units differ. Do not reuse a paver-base quantity as a bedding-sand or driveway-gravel quantity.
- Keep the original measurements with the estimate.
- Record every selected allowance and product quantity.
- Recalculate when the layout or product changes.
Assumptions
State what the estimate assumes
A useful estimate is reproducible because its geometry, product data, and limitations remain visible.
- Dimensions describe the finished footprint; excavation and edge conditions are checked separately.
- Compacted depth and loose purchase multiplier come from the current design, material, or supplier.
- The estimate does not design drainage, bearing capacity, frost protection, pavement structure, or excavation safety.

Before you calculate
Revisit the site with the sketch and confirm dimensions at the locations that control material quantities.
- Check units and decimal placement.
- Photograph or note irregular transitions.
- Confirm package coverage and supplier units.
- Keep local-code, manufacturer, and design requirements separate from quantity arithmetic.
